Night In The Woods players take on the role of Mae the cat, who drops out of college and returns to the mining town of Possum Springs where she grew up. Upon her return she finds herself in possession of “new abilities” which allow her to explore areas of the town which were previously unknown to her.
Best friend of Mae until 7th Grade, Bea was valedictorian of her graduating class but, instead of going to college, stayed home to help out her father with the family business after her mother passed away. Bea is presented as a crocodile, usually smoking a cigarette.
Gregg & Angus
Gregg appears to be a fox, Angus a Bear. The former is Mae’s best friend, while Angus was “that kid in school who wore ties and fedoras for no good reason.” Angus and Gregg are often seen holding hands, though whether they are in a relationship is unknown.
Germ is an enigma. He’s a bird, and he seems friendly, but nobody knows who he is or where he came from. Nobody knows “what his deal is”.
Night In The Woods appears to be predominantly a 2D platform experience, though with a heavy emphasis on exploration, character interaction and development. The art style is flat and colourful, and characters communicate with speech bubbles.
An ongoing theme of the game seems to be introspection and an exploration of existential dilemmas. There is the suggestion that “the world will end”, though whether this was meant metaphorically or literally has not yet been revealed.
Night In The Woods was successfully funded on Kickstarter on November 22nd, 2013. It is being developed by Alec Holowka and Scott Benson.
On October 26th, 2016, the development team announced Night In The Woods would be released on January 10th, 2017. On December 19th, 2016, the developers announced through Kickstarter that the game’s release would be delayed until early February 2017.
